Brooklyn. Sometime before 1836, Daniel and Eliza were married, probably in Brooklyn.

In 1836, Daniel and Eliza's first child Irene was born in Brooklyn.

In 1838, Daniel and Eliza's second child Robert was born in Brooklyn.

A Daniel McDonald appears in the 1840 census in the 2nd Ward of Brooklyn, New York. He has a wife and two children. He and his wife are age 20-29. The children, a boy and a girl, are age 0-4. Daniel's occupational category is "navigation of canals, lakes, and rivers."

The 1840 city directory for Brooklyn includes a Daniel M'Donald, laborer, at 39 York Street. This is on the north side of York, just east of Washington, between the present-day approaches to the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

According to the 1854 city directory, 39 York Street was in the 2nd Ward, which was bounded by Fulton Street on the west, the East River on the north, Bridge Street on the east and Sands Street on the south.

The York Street address is 0.3 miles from the Fulton Ferry, which took people across the East River, a distance of 731 yards. The ferry ran from Fulton Street in Brooklyn to Fulton Street in Manhattan. According to A History of Long Island, from Its First Settlement by Europeans, to the Year 1845, the steam boats left every few minutes and made the trip to manhattan in five minutes for a fare of four cents. The Brooklyn Bridge, the first bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan, was not constructed until 1883.

In 1841, Daniel and Eliza's third child Sarah was born in Brooklyn.

In 1842, Daniel and Eliza's fourth child Daniel was born in Brooklyn.

In 1846, Daniel and Eliza's fifth child Edward was born in Brooklyn.

In 1847, Daniel and Eliza's sixth child James was born in Brooklyn. For some reason, he was not living with them in the 1850 census.

Wisconsin. Sometime between 1846 and 1850, Daniel and Eliza moved from Brooklyn to Wisconsin. In the 1850 census, they were living in Plymouth, Rock County, Wisconsin.

In 1852, Daniel and Eliza's Seventh child Mary was born in Wisconsin.

In the 1855 Wisconsin State census, a D. McDonald was living in Washington Township, Green County. In the 1860 census, the family was living in Monticello, Washington Township, Green County. In the 1870 census, the family was living in Albany, Washington Township, Green County.

In 1871, Daniel and Eliza's son Daniel married Ellen Flannery in Adams, Green County, Wisconsin. Daniel was listed in the marriage record as a farmer living in Washington Township, Green County.

Iowa. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Daniel and Eliza and their son James moved from their farm in Washington Township, Green County, Wisconsin, to a farm in Coon, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Also during that period, their son Edward and his family moved from the farm in Washington Township to a farm in Silver Lake, Palo Alto County, Iowa.

Iowa. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, Daniel and Eliza died. We do not know which one died first. They had been married 45 to 65 years, assuming they were married in 1835.
